Many Catholics are unable to get to Mass on Sunday because of their advanced age, frail condition, or other health issue. Just when they most need the consolation of the Holy Eucharist, it is not available to them.
The Communion to the Homebound and Sick Ministry of this parish is dedicated to visiting these brothers and sisters and bringing them the Real Presence of the Lord Jesus in Holy Communion. These visits also often provide a most welcome social component to otherwise lonely and sometimes drab living circumstances.
Simple, our ministry, is yet often also sublime and powerful:
- By going forth from Mass, we actually bring the solidarity of all who attended the liturgical celebration to those we visit.
- When we distribute Holy Communion, we bring the whole parish and its collective prayers to a quiet little room in a senior center or private residence.
- Our ministers take the Eucharist to our homebound or sick clients every Sunday after the 8:30 a.m. Mass
Who can join, what to expect, and how are you prepared:
- Our ministers are average people–old and young, male and female.
- The only “talent or grace” they possess is a desire to be of service to those in need and a deep love for Jesus in the Holy Eucharist.
- Ministers are thoroughly trained to handle all aspects of this ministry.
- There is abundant written material, personal coaching, as well as an experienced minister to go along with all the new ministers until they feel totally comfortable with their assignments.
- Ministers are normally scheduled to make one visit per month after the 8:30 a.m. Mass. Visits usually last about an hour.
